Martinique is one of a string of volcanic islands. Mount Pelee, 4500 feet, at the north end of Martinique’s backbone is one of the highest in the Caribbean. Volcanic mounts and persistent easterly trade winds cause frequent showers in the rain forests. High “Christmas Winds” veering northeast caused showers to spill into the southern harbors causing frequent rainbows over several days.
