Lighthouse and Kite Surfer

The 21st day of September. Powerful winds blew summer out making way for the autumn air. A kite surfer takes advantage of the strong wind as Lake Michigan roars around him. Taken in Frankfort, Michigan.

Awesome Washington State Sunset

Winter Sunset, Lopez Island, Washington, USA. The winter sun sets behind San Juan Island, lighting up heavy cloud cover from underneath. I shot the photo January 30, 2015, with a Canon PowerShot S2 IS. This image is straight from the camera without any retouching or cropping.

We see many stunning sunsets in the San Juan Islands. Some attribute this to the fact that the sun sets behind the frequently rainy west shore of Vancouver Island, BC. They get the rain; we get the refraction.

Rain Storm Over Mount Pelee

Photo location: Saint Pierre, Martinique, French West Indies
(eastern Caribbean island of Martinique). Taken with an Ipad from the deck of our live-aboard ketch, Roxy.

Photo taken 23 February 2017

Rain swirls over Mount Pelee. Martinique is one of a string of volcanic islands. Mount Pelee, 4500 feet, at the north end of Martinique’s backbone is one of the highest in the Caribbean. Pelee erupted most recently in 1902, burying the town of Saint Pierre, 30,000 population. The lone survivor was a prisoner in the drunk tank according to legend.

The high mountains cause near constant rains from the persistent easterly trade winds. The high elevations are tropical rain forests. A hike to Pelee’s summit from Saint Pierre is an aggressive long day of climbing.

Low Rainbow at Martinique

Photo location: Cul De Sac Marin, Martinique, French West Indies
(eastern Caribbean island of Martinique). Taken with an Ipad from the deck of our live-aboard ketch, Roxy.

Photo taken 29 January 2018

Martinique is one of a string of volcanic islands. Mount Pelee, 4500 feet, at the north end of Martinique’s backbone is one of the highest in the Caribbean. Volcanic mounts and persistent easterly trade winds cause frequent showers in the rain forests. High “Christmas Winds” veering northeast caused showers to spill into the southern harbors causing frequent rainbows over several days.
